PCI to introduce clinical pharmacists in healthcare system

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) is working towards finalisation of a draft for introducing clinical pharmacists in the healthcare system for patients counselling and recording the medical history of patients, apart from other efforts including works towards rational use of medicine and safe disposal of medicine guidelines.

Its projects under pipeline include the process of implementation of new subjects to the pharmacy course curriculum, opening of Centres of Excellence (CoEs) across the country for the skill development process of pharmacists, among others.

The PCI, while releasing the World Pharmacist Day wishes of Dr. Montukumar M. Patel, president of the Council, said that the future plans include finalisation the draft for introducing the clinical pharmacist in health care system for patients counselling and records the medical history of patients, draft of restricted prescription right to match Indian pharmacy to globe. It is working on rational use of medicine and safe disposal of medicine guidelines, developing the virtual practical in laboratory system through use of artificial intelligence, and developing the training modules for patient counselling of National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM).

The other future programmes include bringing in guidelines for teacher promotion and salary issues pending for a long time, draft rules for teacher promotion and pay-scale, and development of a portal for virtual inspection to expedite the approval process.

“This Pharmacist’s Day, let’s take an Oath to make the world a better place to live by educating society regarding the importance of organ donation and saving lives. Also, increase the awareness amongst the community for rational use of drugs and strengthen the health systems by doing patient counselling across the country,” said Dr Patel.

The projects of PCI under pipeline include process of implementation of new subjects to the pharmacy course curriculum, conduct of Exit and Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test Examination, plans to open COEs across the country for the skill development process of Pharmacists, convening of meeting with state pharmacy councils to resolve the issues regarding registration of pharmacists and for smoothening of registration process, introduction of various other platforms to maintain the integrity of the profession, such as faculty portal, student portal, and Pharmacist Registration and Tracking System (PRTS) for digitalisation of Pharmacy Practice in India.

It added that the work done by PCI under the leadership of Dr Patel include signing up Memorandum of Understandings with various stakeholders as a skill development process for the training of teachers and students, framing of Diploma in Pharmacy Exit Examination Regulations, 2022 with the objective of judgement of skills of a registered pharmacist to meet the expectations on a global scale, hiring of new staff to PCI office to extend the quality of work, and introduction of job portal for pharmacy professionals, it added.
