Exports of Ayush related products grew 53% in five years till FY 21

Exports of Ayush related products from the country have gone up around 53 per cent in five years from the financial year 2016-17 to 2020-21, according to the Ministry of Ayush. The imports, on the other hand, has increased around 42 per cent during the period, with a majority of the products based on the value imported from countries like Afghanistan, Germany, Nepal, and Vietnam.

According to the data from the Ministry, India’s total export value of Ayush related products increased from Rs 4,508 crore in FY 17 to Rs 6,881 crore in FY 21. Total import value of the Ayush related products increased from Rs 1,685 crore in FY 17 to Rs 2,386 crore in FY 21, with a 42 per cent increase.

“The export and import of Ayush related products takes place under the Indian Trade Classification based on Harmonized System of Coding (ITCHS) through 74 HS codes,” said the Ministry.

However, it may be noted that most of the products of Ayurveda, Homoeopathic, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Unani systems, Herbal Products and Medicinal Plant products are not identified under specific HS Codes (International Harmonised Commodity Description and Coding system), hence the actual quantum of exports and imports is expected to be at a higher side than figures reported under 74 HS Codes, it added.

The Ministry of Ayush has launched Ayush Export Promotion Council (EPC) in April, 2022, with an aim to oversee exports of products of Ayurveda, Homoeopathic, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Unani systems and address trade issues pertaining to them.

According to the data, under the HS Code for Medicaments of Ayurvedic System, the exports of ayurvedic products has gone up from Rs 708.20 crore in the financial year 2016-17, to Rs 1077.87 crore in 2020-21, while under the HS Code for Medicants of Ayurvedic System, it has gone up from Rs 105.10 crore to Rs 111.20 crore during the period.

The exports under the HS Code for Medicaments of Siddha System grew from Rs 84.63 lakh and under HS Code for Medicants of Siddha System from Rs 16 lakh to Rs 1.86 crore and Rs 89.78 crore, respectively during the five year period.

Exports of Medicaments of Unani Systems has gone up from Rs 1.94 crore to Rs 5.41 crore and under the HS Code for medicants of Unani Systems, it has grown from Rs 6.89 lakh to Rs 33.66 lakh, during the period.

Homoeopathic medicine exports grew from Rs 6.79 crore to Rs 15.44 crore, while under the HS Code for Medicants of Homoeopathic system the growth was from Rs 1.89 crore to Rs 5.68 crore during the five year period, according to the data.

Almost 60 per cent of the Ayush related products exports in the year 2020-21 came from three States – Gujarat (Rs 1965.26 crore), Maharashtra (Rs 1104.45 crore), and Karnataka (Rs 2040.04 crore).

Imports of Homoeopathic medicines have gone up during the period from Rs 120.47 crore to Rs 203.83 crore during the same period. Imports of Medicaments of Ayurvedic System grew from Rs 7.08 crore to Rs 18.64 crore and Medicants of Ayurvedic System from Rs 39.5 crore to Rs 79.44 crore during the period.

United States of America is the largest export destination for the Ayush related products, with around dsRs 2,685 crore worth of exports reported in the year of 2020-21, reporting a growth from Rs 1,730 crore exports reported in 2016-17. The other countries which registered more than Rs 100 crore in terms of exports of Ayush related products from India include Germany (Rs 479 crore in FY 21), Korean Republic (Rs 274 crore), United Arab Emirates (Rs 264 crore), China (Rs 246 crore), France (Rs 216 crore), Italy (Rs 216 crore), Japan (Rs 180 crore), Australia (Rs 159 crore), United Kingdom (Rs 141 crore), Nepal (Rs 126 crore), and Vietnam SOC Republic (Rs 106 crore), among others.

In terms of imports, the Ayush related products were imported to India from Afghanistan (Rs 853 crore in FY 21), Germany (Rs 235 crore), Nepal (Rs 212 crore), Vietnam (Rs 188 crore), and China (Rs 144 crore) among others.
