Exploring the reasons behind increasing burdens on clinical research sites

R&D
pharmaphorum podcast episode 106a

In the first of a five-part festive instalment of the pharmaphorum podcast, web editor Nicole Raleigh speaks with Advarra’s chief product officer, Elisa Cascade, about the reasons behind increasing burdens on clinical research sites over the last five years.

Advarra provides regulatory review solutions and clinical research technology for sites and sponsors, and much has changed for clinical research since 2018, especially in the realm of technology and the impact it has on sites. With an extensive background in clinical research technology and on the board of ACRP, Cascade comments on the notion of novelty - and how often and to what extent new technologies really are needed. It is, after all, supposed to be about making a site’s life easier.

The conversation centres on the results of Advarra’s 2023 Study Activation Survey Report, which captured perspectives and experiences from more than 500 North American clinical research site professionals, looking at the role of technology and site tools and their benefits and burdens.

The discussion also touches upon the future of decentralised clinical trials (DCTs) and explores the fundamental support of pragmatic innovation. In short, if a site has its own technology, then connect to it. A balanced clinical trial ecosystem is the end goal.
