Earlier this year, a leading animal rights group asked U.S. authorities to investigate medical research labs for allegedly violating federal law after finding numerous instances where nearly 2,000 monkeys were shipped between facilities without required veterinary inspections.
Now, the federal government appears to be acting.
In recent weeks, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued inspection reports showing Charles River Laboratories —a major clinical research organization — and a trucking company both failed to have non-human primates inspected by a veterinarian no more than 10 days before shipments are delivered, a move that is required under the Animal Welfare Act (see page 85).
