UPMC did not allow patients to receive experimental COVID-19 therapies outside of the context of a clinical trial and used the REMAP-CAP platform, a global pragmatic adaptive trial platform, in all clinic sites. Every patient with COVID-19 was automatically considered. Patients were screened by local teams at each site.

Other data, such as immunizations, social determinants of health (SDOH), patient-generated data, and others, may or may not be in the PCORnet Common Data Model and require additional work for use in research. When we talk about patient-level SDOH measures, the CDM has some general purpose tables that can store that data.

In the initial PARENT trial, intervention families had better performance on receipt of well child care, and patients reported better patient experience and fewer emergency department visits. In the PCORI funded trial we are doing stepped wedge so everyone gets the intervention at some point, which was important to our partners.

BD partners with Biocorp on connected self-injection devices

Medtech giant Beckton Dickinson (BD) has signed a deal with France’s Biocorp to use the latter’s near-field communication (NFC) tags in injectable devices. The Injay tag can confirm a complete injection and transfer that information via an NFC reader to a smartphone or tablet for review by a healthcare professional.
